Villeroy stretched his army to secure his flanks. Seeing an opportunity, Marlborough risked envelopment with a much shorter line that allowed for a greater concentration of force against weakpoints in the enemy's line. Marlborough's gamble paid off in a lopsided victory.

The famous "Blue Guards" served with distinction at Ramillies. They pushed a Swiss garrison out of Franquenee and then followed them to Taviers, which anchored the French right flank. In cramped alleys, brutal close-quarters fighting ensued, with the Dutch eventually emerging victorious.
